Herb Suppliers Salad Greens & Kitchen Herbs

Growers of gourmet lettuces and kitchen Herbs, processors of salad mix, baby spinach and fine cut herb mixes.

Moving away from a big city to live a lifestyle that is more connected to the land, and better business opportunities, was a major factor for the Zehle Family’s decision to migrate from Germany in 1983 to the Adelaide Hills in S.A.

From our passion for healthy, good, fresh food the business ‘Salad Greens and Kitchen Herbs Pty Ltd’ evolved and operated on two smaller farms in the Adelaide Hills. Gourmet salad mix and potted kitchen herbs where the core lines of the business, supplying greengrocers, restaurants and some supermarkets.

2006 brought about an exciting development when the Zehle family purchased a 67-acre farm in Echunga and Sven and Judith Zehle took over the business from the retiring parents and made this pristine, fertile and unpolluted land their own. All of this is only possible with the help of dedicated volunteers, who come from all over the world and help with almost all aspects of the farm operations. Our volunteers are members of Willing Worker On Organic Farms (WWOOF) or come through the HelpX initiative.

Our produce

At Salad Greens and Kitchen Herbs we strive for the freshest produce possible and Sven states “In the Mediterranean, the markets were the only way to shop for fresh ingredients and vegetables – we try to provide the same thing here at Salad Greens and Kitchen Herbs”. Our produce is delivered 6 days a week and the family trades at farmer’s markets in Wayville, Willunga and Mt Barker during the week and on weekends.

Trading at various farmer’s markets, having many loyal customers all over Adelaide, being passionate about growing and supplying healthy vegetables, we knew the demand was there to expand our variety of crops on offer. We found some niche market produce and no shortage of customers who appreciate our family’s growing practices, where we are situated and what the name Salad Greens and Kitchen Herbs has been standing for, for over 20 years now – that is quality, purity and service.

Today the deliveries are expanding from the city and surrounding suburbs to leading distributors in and close to the buzzing ‘Pooraka Market. Being asked by leading restaurant chefs in Adelaide the Zehle family has started to grow edible flowers and more exotic micro herbs from seed in their plant nursery section of the business.

There is growing interest in micro greens as the health benefits hold a higher content of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals which are becoming well known. With 25 varieties of potted micro herbs and punnets of mixed micro greens, there is plenty of choice and an abundant selection throughout the Seasons. Mixing micro greens with edible petals from our garden and an exciting, colourful garnish has been created and becomes a stunning decoration for any meal.

Our growing practices

At Salad Greens and Kitchen Herbs our lettuces, potted herbs and bok choy are grown hydroponically, with minimal spray practices for the lettuces during winter time and no sprays (pesticides and herbicides) for any of the herbs at all. A well balanced variety of nutrients is used, including mineral salts, BFA certified kelp solutions and fulvic acid, and, unlike many hydroponic growers, we do not over-feed the plants. This results in a noticeable difference in shelf-life and taste, and is something which we often receive positive comments about.

Operating hydroponics requires good quality water. At Salad Greens and Kitchen Herbs we aerate the water we use and, through reverse osmosis, purify it to minimise mineral particles so that it is almost pure water. We also use ozone and colloidal silver treatments to kill bacteria and fungi.
